As a scalp expert brand, we recognize that our physical and mental states do not exist in isolation. When we feel anxious, we might experience increased heart rate, trembling, sweating, dry mouth, gastrointestinal issues, and muscle tension, among other emotional, cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Furthermore, anxiety and stress are known to trigger, worsen, and perpetuate various skin conditions linked to impaired skin barrier function.
Higher levels of psychological turmoil can weaken our scalp by getting in the way of metabolic processes that contribute to our skin’s strength, elasticity, and barrier function. Conversely, studies have indicated that reducing stress levels visibly improves scalp conditions.
For many years, CLEAR has been studying the experiences of young people in collaboration with the Resilience Research Centre (RRC), an institution based in Canada, with a particular focus on scalp problems, anxiety, stress, and how promoting self-efficacy and other self-mastery tools can be used to combat these problems.
We have uncovered that more than 70% of young adults are affected by performance anxiety, a psychological phenomenon often characterized by feelings of intense nervousness or fear related to performing in front of others. In our study, 69% of participants attributed their anxiety to visible scalp problems and 60% believed anxiety can lead to scalp problems including dandruff.
With the rise of anxiety levels in our society, our mission is to break the chain of reaction to anxiety and scalp problems and empower people with a CLEAR HEAD to perform in life.
CLEAR is mindful of how we portray individuals affected by it in our communications. Our communication is a source of empowerment, not anxiety to break free from negative stereotypes surrounding scalp problems like dandruff.
We also have worked with RRC since 2021 to pioneer a groundbreaking intervention aiming to break the chain reaction of performance anxiety and increased risks of scalp problems through the lens of self-efficacy – an individual's belief in their capability to accomplish tasks, overcome challenges, and achieve desired outcomes.
A meta-analysis study (Hysong & Quinones, 1997) found a significant and positive relationship between self-efficacy and performance, such that higher self-efficacy was associated with better performance. Other studies have found that enhancing self-efficacy, particularly in those with low initial self-efficacy, leads to higher achievement, for example in academic or work-related contexts (e.g., Ferla et al., 2009, Judge et al., 2007).
3 OUT OF 4 YOUTH experiencing performance anxiety had low self-esteem.
Youth with higher self-efficacy were 3 TIMES LESS PRONE to experience performance anxiety.
By equipping youth with self-efficacy through the CLEAR HEAD Project, we seek to reduce scalp-related anxiety, boost physical confidence and elevate performance.
